5 Tips to Avoid Plaque with your Braces
Brush Regularly - Brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride-containing toothpaste is vital to a healthy mouth. Make sure you softly brush all the surfaces of your teeth.
Floss Daily – A simple daily flossing between teeth clears away plaque before it can cause damage and can also clean plaque at the gum line. Plaque is known to reach the spaces between teeth.
Don’t skip the Dentist - Consider visiting your dentist at least twice a year or as recommended by your dentist, and you have a lower chance of getting cavities while wearing braces.
Stop Avoiding Fruits & Veggies – Believe it or not, there are foods out there that play a key role in keeping plaque off our teeth. They include apples, carrots, cucumbers and other raw fruits and vegetables. You can still eat these types of fruits and veggies if you have braces, but be sure to cut them up into bite sized pieces to avoid breaking off brackets.
Avoid giving into your Sweet Tooth - Consuming sugary drinks or eating candy or other junk food allows sugar to stick to our teeth. The bacteria, then, becomes plaque, which turns into acid and damages teeth.
The above 5 habits will help keep your plaque in check and your mouth as healthy as can be during your orthodontic treatments here at Edina Orthodontics.

Edina Orthodontics & Smiley Riley visited Elementary Schools
Here is a slideshow presentation of some of our visits to the Elementary schools in Edina. We do this in February for National Children’s Dental Health Month.
What is National Children’s Dental Health Month? Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. NCDHM messages and materials have reached millions of people in communities across the country. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.
We like to have fun in our offices, but we also love getting out in the community. It was so fun to see all the children’s smiling faces, to teach them the importance of taking care of their teeth. The kids especially enjoyed their visit from Smiley Riley! Enjoy the video and let us know if you’d like to have us visit your school next year.

What to Do the First Days After Braces Treatment - Braces Edina
Congratulations on your journey to straighter teeth, correcting your bite and improving your dental health! However with your new dental appliance, adjustments will be made. First off, particularly just after you have your braces fitted an odd feeling of having something in your mouth that you cannot remove. Soreness may set in on the second and third day when the braces are beginning to modify to correct your bite. Most likely, by the third day your braces will now be a part of you. They just take a little bit of getting used to.
Here are a few tips to help you through your first days after braces:
#1 Eat soft foods for the first few days
Soft foods are your best nutrition for the first few days after getting your braces. In order to satisfy your stomach eat foods that do not cause much friction in your mouth – mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, soup, scrambled eggs, ice cream and yogurt, among others. These foods are easy on your mouth and do not put much pressure on your teeth to eat.
#2 Use warm saltwater rinse, as needed
A proven and tested solution to ease soreness in the mouth is to rinse it with saltwater. The saturated saline solutions relieve the swelling in the mouth. It also reduces inflammation and holds bacteria at bay to improve your dental health. A good proportion for the solution is to mix 1 tsp of salt to a cup of warm water.
#3 Take Tylenol or Ibuprofen
Taking the recommended dosage of over-the-counter pain relievers, such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen, can further ease the pain can also be helpful.
#4 Put wax over any problem areas
It’s not just your teeth that will be adjusting with your braces. Your cheeks and tongue, as well, as these will rub against the braces. In such cases, sore spots may develop in your mouth. These can be relieved with the orthodontic wax what is provided in your braces kit provided by your orthodontist. Apply the wax generously for comfort by squashing it between your fingers and firmly press to the brackets. Avoid stroking your sores with your tongue or even fingers because it will hurt more.
With the above, these should get you by for the first few days after your braces. However, when pain persists, do not hesitate to consult us for proper adjustments.
